Strengthening Behaviour Management

Behaviour management is a crucial aspect of effective teaching, and this term, I set out to refine my strategies to create a more structured and engaging learning environment. Through professional development, classroom observations, and trialling new techniques, I have gained valuable insights into what works best in my classroom.

One of the biggest takeaways from my learning journey has been the importance of consistency. Establishing clear expectations from the beginning and following through with predictable consequences has helped create a sense of security for my students. I have also learned that positive reinforcement plays a powerful role in behaviour management. Acknowledging students for their efforts and improvements—whether through verbal praise, reward systems, or simple gestures like a smile or a thumbs-up—has significantly increased their motivation to follow class expectations.

Another key strategy I have implemented is proactive behaviour management. Rather than waiting for disruptions to occur, I have focused on preventing them by using engaging lesson structures, movement breaks, and clear transitions. I have also made a conscious effort to build strong relationships with my students, ensuring they feel valued and understood. When students trust their teacher, they are more likely to respond positively to expectations.

Seeking feedback has been instrumental in my growth. Conversations with colleagues, reflecting on my classroom experiences, and even asking students what helps them stay on track have all guided my approach. By continuously refining my strategies and staying open to learning, I feel more confident in my ability to create a positive classroom environment where students can thrive.
