Essential and Non-Essential Classroom Decor

Starting a new school year is always exciting, and setting up your classroom is a big part of that. However, it's important to remember that you don't need a fully decorated classroom from day one. In fact, it's more beneficial to create and develop your environment with your students as they progress through their learning cycles and interests. Here's my guide to what you truly need and don't need at the beginning of the year.

Must-Haves for the Start of the Year:

  • Basic Organisation Tools: A well-organised classroom sets the tone for a smooth start. Essential items for me include a daily schedule, labelled storage bins, and a tidy desk area (for me this includes a well labelled 'teacher toolbox'). These tools help facilitate daily routines and keep everything running smoothly.
  • Flexible Seating Options: While you don’t need a complete seating overhaul, having a few different seating options can cater to various learning styles, unique student needs and provide physical changes/transitions depending on the lesson. Consider bean bags, floor cushions, traditional desks and lap desks.
  • Bulletin Boards and Display Areas: Leave these areas relatively blank initially. Use them to display students' work, interests and current learning as the year progresses. This creates a sense of ownership and pride among students.
  • Minimalist Decor: Keep it simple with a few key posters and visual aids. Focus on materials that support learning and can be built upon throughout the year.

What You Don’t Need Right Away:

  • Theme-Specific Decor: While it's fun to have a themed classroom, it's not essential from the start. You can gradually introduce themes based on your curriculum and students' interests.
  • Complete Wall Coverage: Don’t feel the need to cover every inch of wall space. Empty spaces can be filled with students' projects and seasonal decorations over time.
  • Excessive Furniture: Avoid cluttering your classroom with too much furniture. Start with the basics and add more as needed based on your students' needs and preferences.

Creating a Dynamic Environment: It's more important to create a classroom environment that evolves with your students. Start with the basics and let your classroom grow organically. This approach not only saves time and resources but also fosters a sense of community and involvement among your students.
